DOULIVA TASK FORCE RESULTS DISSEMINATION DAY

THURSDAY 06TH JUNE

Venue: Assembly Hall of the National Agri-Food Technology Centre CTAEX

Next Thursday 6 June at 09:30, will take place in the assembly hall of CTAEX (www.ctaex.com) a large part of the olive sector to see first-hand some of the results of the Douliva Regional Operational Group, which aims to strengthen the competitiveness of the olive, olive oil and table olive sector through the implementation of digitisable solutions that help to reduce the impact of climate change on olive growing and its products and ensure the most sustainable management possible of the olive oil and table olive value chains.

This conference will focus on the sustainability of the value chain of virgin olive oils, from how climate change affects our EVOOs and how to mitigate it, to the packaging of the oils obtained.

Sustainability has become a crucial issue today because of the need to preserve natural resources and ensure a future as close to the present as possible for future generations. In this context, olive groves and olive oil mills play a fundamental role, as they are closely linked to the production of olive oil, an essential food in the Mediterranean diet and in many other cultures. In this context, olive groves and olive oil mills play a fundamental role, as they are closely linked to the production of olive oil, an essential food in the Mediterranean diet and in many other cultures.

The aim of the day on sustainability in olive groves and olive oil mills is to raise awareness among producers, workers and consumers of the importance of adopting sustainable practices throughout the production chain. From the cultivation of the olive tree to the marketing of EVOO, every step must consider the environmental and social impact.

This day will explore various areas related to sustainability in olive groves and olive oil mills in different presentations:

  • Cultivo responsable: el efecto de la temperatura en la producción y cómo poder mitigarlo.
  • Energy efficiency and water management in the olive mill.
  • Community and employees: addressing the importance of fair working conditions, the training of workers and the integration of the local community in the activities of the mills.
  • Sustainable marketing and communication: We will explore strategies for communicating the sustainable values of olive products and how to reach conscious consumers.

These points will be discussed with the participation of technicians from the DOULIVA Regional Operational Group: Manuel Zambrano (Viñaoliva), Diego Díaz (Río Lacarón), Sofía Redondo-Redondo (CTAEX) and Alfonso Montaño (CTAEX). In addition, in order to broaden solutions and experience, the day will feature the presentation of technology for the analysis of olives directly on the tree developed by the company SOLTEL. Pedro Guarente (SOLTEL) and Julio Barbancho (PRODTI Foundation) will present the results of their SCOUT project. To get an insight into the last links of the value chain, Bartolomé Lara from DEOLEO, will talk about the importance and value for his company of sustainability from its suppliers to the final consumer, as every day this aspect is key to strengthen the commercial links between producers and packers.

The conference was brought to a close by Fabián Gordillo Lemus as Representative of the Oil Sector of Agri-food Cooperatives of Extremadura in order to show that the sector

Sustainability in olive groves and mills is not only a responsibility, but also an opportunity to create a more competitive future for the sector by being more sustainable, and cooperatives are already working along these lines.
